When local telcos advertise business broadband plans, they typically refer to connections delivered over copper infrastructure, or a combination of fiber and copper. The signal may travel over fiber for part of the route but switches to older copper lines for the final stretch into your building. This is called fiber-to-the-node (FTTN): fiber reaches a nearby cabinet and copper carries it the rest of the way. These plans are typically asymmetrical, best-effort, and shared with other users on the same line.

What Fiber Internet Is

Fiber internet transmits data as pulses of light through optical cables rather than electrical signals over copper wire. This is what makes it fundamentally different, not just faster.

Fiber cables do not degrade with distance the way copper does. Signal quality over one kilometer is essentially the same as over ten kilometers. Fiber is also far less susceptible to electrical interference, which is one of the most common causes of inconsistent performance on copper-based connections, particularly in areas with older infrastructure.

A true fiber connection, sometimes called fiber-to-the-building (FTTB), means the cable runs directly into your office or building. There is no copper in the last stretch. The word fiber on a plan does not tell you which category you are actually in.

Which One Is Right for Your Business

For most established business operations, dedicated fiber is the right choice. The main considerations are timing and scale. If your business is small and internet use is mostly for browsing, email, and occasional video calls, a standard plan may be sufficient for now.
